3 Reasons Why Taking Big Creative Break Can Help Your Work Soar Now.

Hi, Creative Friends-

Life can be overwhelming and our work, the work that captures the highest expression of ourselves, can be incredibly rewarding but it can also be depleting. Have you found yourself deep in a project that needs every ounce of talent, laser focus, and oodles of your time only to find the project isn’t progressing as you had wished? That’s when we need a break and here are…

3 Creative Ideas To Take A Break To Help Your Work Soar.

  1. Doodle Up Your Day: Yes, doodling works to help flush out ideas and switch the brain into a mode of creative meditation. When you find yourself frustrated with your work, set a timer for 5, 15, or 30 min and doodle up your day. Draw what you gobbled down for breakfast, something funny you noticed on your way to work, or a few office supplies on your desk. Doodling will soften the brain, help flush out ideas and relieve stress.

  2. Bring On The Om: Try humming for a few minutes. Did you know humming even a simple “Om” like in yoga can reduce stress levels and stabilize a heartbeat? A simple humming sound can clear the mind to make room for new ideas that can make work soar.

  3. Creative Naptime: The famous painter Salvador Dalí did it and you can too, take a nap to make your work better. Read all about how Dalí used naps to influence his creative work at “Artsy: Taking A Nap Could Make You More Creative.”

Focus On Love This February And Make Life Bloom With These 3 Creative Ideas

Hi, Creative Friends-

It’s February and love is in the air! If you are a bit like me, it can be hard to make time for the people and things we love when life is total chaos. However, focusing on love, whether it’s taking time for a friend or tapping into an activity that brings us joy becomes even more important as the year rolls forward. That’s why here are…

3 Creative Ideas To Focus On Love & Make Life Bloom.

  1. Make Time For Hugs: This one seems kind of weird and obvious to suggest but did you know creating time for hugs and physical affection is important for our mental health? Studies show hugs can improve social bonding, slow heart rate, and reduce stress and anxiety. In short, hugs make us bloom! Make hugs an intentional part of your February by setting a timer daily on a calendar for a 1 -minute “Hug break.” Use this “Bear Hug” coloring sheet to make the time even connective.

  2. Whisk Up Love: Creating something we love in the kitchen is good for our mind, body, and creative soul! For February, try this recipe from Molly Wilk for “One Bite Texas Sheet Cake Truffles” and watch love bloom as everyone swoons over these delicious chocolate treats.

  3. Bouquet Time: When it’s the beginning of February, and we are in the trenches of winter, it can be hard to feel like anything is going to bloom, ever! This is why it’s a great time to pick up a big bouquet of flowers at a local market or this “February Violet Birthday Flower print at Society 6” as a reminder there is “room to bloom” even in the depths of winter!

Drop me a message and let me know what you are working on and how you will focus on love in February.

Sprinkle Your Monday Happy With The Best Cookie Recipe.
pinata_cookies_sq_1.jpg

// Hello Friends -

Fridays come and go, balloons pop, rainbows don't always appear after a rainstorm, and Mondays can seem like a bad ending from a good movie. However, there is something that we can count on to make our Monday happy. Doused on a cake, bedazzled on ice cream or slathered on top of a cookie these little darlings are better than an any TGIF.

Beautiful, tiny, sweet, little sprinkles.

pinata_cookies_8.JPG

They say life is good. Life is fun. Let's celebrate even on a Monday!

Smitten Kitchen has a fantastic Confetti Cookie recipe. The Piñata Cookie directions below were inspired and barely adapted from their flaky, buttery and sweet gem of a recipe. These piñata delights are bursting with rainbow fun and are bound to make Mondays a little more tolerable.

Piñata Cookies

  • 3 cups (375 grams) all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

  • 3/4 teaspoon fine sea or table salt

  • 1 cup (8 ounces, 225 grams or 2 sticks) unsalted butter softened at room temp

  • 1/4 cup (2 ounces, 55 grams or 1/4 of an 8-ounce brick) cream cheese softened at room temp

  • 1 1/4 cups (250 grams) granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 11/4 cup Wilton sprinkles rainbow sparkling sugar & Wilton sprinkles white sparkling sugar mixed

Step 1: Heat oven to 375 degrees. Line two baking large sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2: Place flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl, combine and set aside. In a stand-up mixer, cream butter and cream cheese for 3 minutes until fluffy. Add the sugar and blend for 3 more minutes. Add egg and vanilla and mix until combined.

Step 3: Add flour mixture to wet mixture and beat just until flour disappears. This dough might feel too soft to roll into balls. Let the dough chill in the refrigerator for approximately 10 minutes.

Step 4: Scoop balls of dough slightly smaller than golf ball size and roll them briefly in the palms of your hands. Drop them in a bowl of sprinkles and roll to coat evenly.

pinata_cookies_4.JPG

Step 5: Transfer balls of sprinkle-coated dough to baking sheets at least two inches apart. Use the bottom of a drinking glass to press down on the cookies until they are about 1/4 to 1/2-inch tall. Bake for 9 to 10 minutes until they are lightly golden underneath. Remove from oven and let the cookies set on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.  Repeat with remaining cookie dough.

May your Monday now be full of happiness and sunshine.

And sprinkles. Lots and lots of sprinkles.

Until soon friends. //

Day 27. Recipe 27.

It isn't often we fall in love hard for something. Every once in a while, however, a substance comes along that sweeps us off our feet. We find ourselves surrendering to the bliss that is brought on by this thing that suddenly gives our lives pizazz and meaning.

And it's always the simple things where we find love.

Cacio e Pepe is no exception.

Deeply salted noodles caressed in Pecorino Romano cheese is the taste of divinity.

My husband unknowingly requested we buy red sauce "Just in case the kids wouldn't eat the plain noodles."

Oh, how he ate his words as the entire family sat together quietly filling our bellies to the brim with Cacio e Pepe.

Everyone fell in love hard with this recipe.

Cacio e Pepe

(adapted from Tales Of Ambrosia)

Step 1: Bring a tall pot of water to a boil with the sea salt. Add the pasta and cook according to the package directions.

Step 2: 3 minutes before the pasta is done, place a large microwavable serving bowl in the microwave and heat for approximately 1-2 minutes until warm. Remove from microwave and set next to the stove.

Step 3: When the pasta is done, using a ladle place 1-2 scoops of salted water from the pasta in the warmed bowl. Add half the cheese and let melt. Drain the pasta and add it to the heated bowl stirring with the salted cheese mixture. Add the remaining cheese if the pasta is too wet. Top with black pepper to taste, add any remaining cheese. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Why A Muffin Top Is The Best Thing About Monday.
muffin_top_sq_2.jpg

Day 26. Recipe 26.

We all want to make today better. However, it's hard to get on top when we don't fuel up with the right stuff to start our week. Sure, the cereal loaded with sugar is easy to grab, and the hot bowl of oatmeal will take too long to make us feel good, so we end up skipping the most important meal of the day.

We just walk in the week hungry, and that isn't right.

To sprint into the week, what should we eat?

A delicious, crispy, golden muffin top of course!

Bake them the night before and we can head out into our day in a jiffy.

Oaty Cherry Muffin Tops

  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup agave syrup or honey
  • 1/4 cup greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup sunflower oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs at room temperature
  • 12 teaspoons cherry preserves
muffin_top_sq_3.jpg

Step 1: Preheat an oven to 350 degrees and spray a standard size muffin tin with cooking spray. Make the oat flour by placing the rolled oats into a blender and pulse until finely ground.

Step 2: In a large bowl, add the oat flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir to combine.

Step 3: In a medium bowl, syrup or honey, yogurt, oil, and vanilla extract and stir to combine. Add the eggs one at a time and mix. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.

Step 4: Fill each muffin cup 1/2 full with batter. Top with approximately 1 teaspoon cherry preserves. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

May this recipe make you the top muffin this week!

Day 25. Recipe 25.

Things can get mundane in this world and Monday is no exception. It can be ho-hum and honestly a real drag. What will get us up and dancing?

Maybe a little twist.

 Wicked Truffle Twists

choco_twists_5.jpg

Step 1: Let the pizza dough warm on the counter for at least 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2: On a floured surface, roll the pizza dough out in an approximate rectangle of 18" x 12". In a microwavable bowl, heat the truffle spread in 30-second intervals until warm and smooth. Smear the spread on the pizza dough leaving 1/4 inch uncovered at each edge.

Step 3: Pick up the short end of the dough, fold the dough over 1.5". The spread is now tucked into the crevice of the fold. Cut the 1.5" from the rest of the dough with a knife. Twist each end of the 1.5" of dough in opposite directions. Place the twist on the baking sheet and repeat this step until all the dough is twisted. Brush melted butter on top of the twists and sprinkle with sugar.

Step 4: Bake the twists in the oven for 10-12 minutes. Serve warm.

This Is The Best Last Minute Valentine For Your Love.
chocolate_covered_strawberries_sq_2.jpg

Day 24. Recipe 24.

We didn't pick up a card; the drug store shelves only hold a few pathetic tchotchkes, and the florist just ran out of roses. It's late on Valentine's Day. How do we say "I love you!" when we only have a few minutes to spare?

Chocolate,

Strawberries,

And a few sprinkles of love.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

  • parchment or waxed paper
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries
  • 1/8 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • heart sprinkles (optional)
chocolate_covered_strawberries.jpg

Step 1: Lay a piece of parchment or waxed paper on a cookie sheet. Wash and gently dry the strawberries. Place them on a paper towel to wick away moisture thoroughly.

Step 2: In a small microwavable bowl, heat the coconut oil and the chocolate in 15-30 second intervals until the chocolate is melted and stirred smooth.

Step 3: Dunk a strawberry in the chocolate and cover 3/4 of a strawberry leaving the stem and 1/4 of the strawberry uncovered. Place on the paper, sprinkle with small candy hearts (optional) and repeat with the remaining strawberries. Let dry for 1 hour.

Here Is the Best Valentine You Will Ever Eat.
rice_treats_valentine_14.jpg

Day 23. Recipe 23.

We all love marshmallow rice treats. They are sticky and oozing with celebratory goodness. For some of us, they transport us back to our childhood. They might even make us want to be a kid again.

Well, every kid and kid at heart is going to LOVE this fun little treat. No one is going to want to return this to sender! It's a bit complicated to assemble, but with just the right ingredients and a bit of time, we can turn these sweet little marshmallow treats into lovely, tiny, and edible valentines.

Valentine Marshmallow Treats

  • 4 oz unsalted butter
  • 1 (10 oz) bag mini marshmallows
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups rice cereal
  • 1 (1 oz)  package freeze-dried strawberries, crushed
  • 1 lb white chocolate melting wafers
  • 1/4 cup  Wilton Love Potion Sprinkles
  • 1 package candy gummy hearts such as Swedish Fish Hearts
rice_treat_valentine_7.jpg

Step 1: Butter a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan. Line the pan with parchment paper. Make sure the paper hangs over the edge approximately 2 inches on each side.

Step 2: In a large saucepan, melt butter on medium heat. It will melt, bubble, turn clear golden and finally start to turn brown. Keep stirring and scrape any butter bits from the bottom of the pan.

Step 3: Remove pan from heat and mix in the marshmallows until the marshmallows are melted and smooth with the butter. Mix in the salt, rice cereal, and freeze-dried strawberries. Stir until combined.

Step 4: With a buttered spatula, press the rice mixture into the bottom of the pan. Cover the top with the sprinkles. Let sit for 20 minutes. Using the overhanging parchment, pull and place the entire slab of rice treats onto a cutting surface. Cut into 2.5" x 3" rectangles.

Step 5: In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the white chocolate melting wafers in 15-30 second intervals stirring until smooth. Using a butter knife or an offset spatula, decorate the rice treat with a triangle on the 3-inch side to look like a flap of an envelope. Dip the back of the gummy heart in the white chocolate and place at the tip of the white chocolate envelope flap. Let cool and serve the same day with your valentine message.
