3 Creative Ideas To Lean Into Doubt When Things Aren't Terrific.

Hi, Creative Friends-

Doubt. It’s the killer of dreams. It can pop up in an instant like an old leaky pipe or a sneaky house cat ready to pounce. Doubt is a destructive jerk who can stop us from living out the most creative part of our lives. When we start to feel like things aren’t terrific and we are about to give up on our dreams…

Here Are 3 Creative Ideas To Lean Into Doubt…

  1. Tap Into The New: Poetry generally doesn’t move me but I stumbled upon a beautiful poem from the American Poet Langston Hughes, called “Dreams.” It is beautiful, short, and complicated but inspires us to hold fast to what makes us whole.

  2. Write It Down: Dreams can fade away if we don’t make them concrete. The first step is to push away doubt by writing down dreams. Here is a great way to keep that dream top of mind and make it a part of a daily routine. Download this FREE “Lean Into Doubt” Smartphone artwork and fill in one dream with the smartphone photo editor. Save this as your artwork or background with your dream in place. Now every time you view your phone screen you will be reminded to lean into doubt and dream big.

  3. Ask For An Artists Help: Sometimes we get stuck in our own heads and there is nothing more destructive than hearing our own doubts like:

    “You can’t do this.”

    “You are not talented enough.”

“Why waste your time when you could be making money doing something REAL?”

Artists wrestle with this doubt monster every damn day. That’s why reaching out to an established artist can be helpful for anyone. Find a class an artist offers, follow them on social media to see their process, or email them to ask how they fight doubt when things aren’t terrific. Knowing we are not alone in our doubts can make our creative work better and our dreams a reality.

Drop me a message and let me know what you are working on and how you lean into creative doubt.

Stay Focused When Working From Home With These 3 Super Creative Ideas.

Working Like A Lady.

Hi, Creative Friends-

Is anyone out there still working from home? If you are a bit like me, it can be hard to focus on work when the responsibilities of the home such as laundry, dishes, pets, supplies to acquire and more can steal our time and attention away from important career goals. In short, the clutter that invades not only our home but our mental space can be overwhelming. That’s why here are…

3 Super Creative Ideas To Help You Stay Focused When WFH…

  1. Schedule The Day: Some use hardcover planners, others the back of a napkin, and a lot embrace planning software like Asana but however you plan best, use a tool to set concrete times to get things done. Scheduling defined time for work and defined home time is key to staying focused and getting things done.

  2. Stay Put: It can be hard to stay at our desks when the supply of home office snacks is depleted and a quick run to the grocery store would be a joyful distraction from the hard work that is looming. That’s why creating a quick reminder to firmly plant your bottom at your desk chair is key. Take a few minutes and make yourself an origami mascot like this Origami Lotus Flower. When tempted to leave your seat look at this folded creation, stop yourself from getting up from your desk, and keep the workflow going until the hard work is complete.

  3. Paperclip Magic: A handful of paperclips and a jar is all you need to keep on task when working from home. For every 30 minutes of focused work done, add a paperclip to the jar. At the end of the day, tally the paper clips to see the progress made toward your ultimate goal even when the laundry looms!

Drop me a message and let me know what you are working on and your tricks to stay focused when working from home.

Watch Spring Bloom Beautiful With These 3 Interesting Creative Ideas.

Hi, Creative Friends-

Spring is here and if you are a bit like me, this season has a way of making everything feel fresh, interesting, and beautiful with a blink of an eye! That’s why spring is a great time to rethink what’s possible, make changes, and refresh ideas. This week let’s…

Watch Spring Bloom Beautiful With 3 Interesting Creative Ideas.

  1. The Decorated Egg: The tradition of coloring eggs dates as far back as 2,500 years ago when the ancient Persians celebrated Persian New Year, Nowruz. More can be read about the history of decorating eggs in the article Kitchn: Why Do We Decorate Easter Eggs, Anyway? Then try your hand at making “Pysanky” or Ukrainian decorated eggs, which are an interesting, beautiful, and creative way to celebrate spring.

  2. A Rose By Any Other Name: Is there a spring flower that is more beautiful than a rose? Well, probably not if it’s a David Austin rose. David Austin sells the most interesting, beautiful, and creative rose bushes around. Try planting roses like the “Jude The Obscure” and the “Tea Clipper.” What would be a better way to make spring bloom than to watch spring bloom for years to come?

  3. Everlasting Boquet: Creating with kids is a great way to make spring beautiful and fun. Here is an interesting project everyone can enjoy: “Giant Paper Flowers.” Whip up 1 or a million this project is a terrific way to create something sweet beautiful to celebrate the season of possibilities!

Drop me a message and let me know what you are working on and how you are creating for springtime.

Here Are 3 Creative Ways To Help, Support Peace And Love For Ukraine.

Hi, Creative Friends-

It’s hard to see the humanitarian crisis occurring right now and the suffering taking place in Ukraine. Friends in Ukraine are asking for donations to buy baby formula, medicine, and basic hygiene supplies. Personally, I can’t imagine the heartache and agony that is going on right now in Ukraine. If you are a bit like me and want resources to support the Ukrainian people…

Here Are 3 Creative Ways To Help The People Of Ukraine Right Now.

  1. Give To Direct Relief Ukraine: Citizen Brick is run by an old friend of mine who is an incredible fine artist. Joe took an interesting turn in his creative career and turned his creative work into a big business selling tiny custom Lego figures. Most importantly, Joe created a “Zelensky Mini Figure” and raised almost $150,000 for Direct Relief Ukraine. Who said creativity doesn’t help the world hasn’t met Joe! Go be like Joe and donate to Direct Relief Ukraine and then check out super cool products at Citizen Brick.

  2. Support World Kitchen: Jośe Andres is a world-famous chef who has created an amazing network of other chefs to show up in times of crisis to help others through World Kitchen. WCK has provided tens of millions of fresh, nourishing meals for communities in need around the world and they are doing the same at the Ukrainian border. Support World Kitchen by making a donation here Donation To World Kitchen.

  3. Send Support Get Art: Being an artist and selling creative work can be challenging at the best of times, to say the least. Now imagine being a Ukraine artist in the middle of a war. If you would like to support a Ukraine artist here is a list at The Geek Diary: Support Ukrainian Artists And Other Creatives.

Lastly, make a donation to anywhere organization that supports Ukraine and then download this “Peace For Ukraine” poster. Print it and place it in a window or give it to a friend and then…

Renew The Creative, Joyful Self With These 3 Ideas.

Hi, Creative Friends,

Who’s enjoying hints of spring this week? Perhaps the flowers are blooming, the sun is glowing and if you are a bit like me, Spring is an amazing time to renew the mind with creative ideas.

This week, in the spirit of Spring, here are 3 things that inspire & renew creative thinking:

  1. Take in a good book about empathy and renewal, as you soak up the sweet spring sunshine and read “Maybe You Should Talk To Someone: A Therapist, HER Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed. ” by Lori Gottlieb. This book offers an interesting perspective on what really drives the behavior of others and their struggles through the lens of a therapist. If renewing a sense of childhood creates joy, the book “Charlotte’s Web" By E.B. White, is a classic. Not only did my 7-year-old find it lovely, but it also provided a renewed sense of friendship and empathy that carries through and speaks to adulthood.

  2. Spring days are longer, which means we spend more time outside soaking up the sunshine. The time to make dinner is now limited. Here is a secret, simple recipe that will create so much joy even when the sun has set and bedtime looms. Cacio e Pepe, the simple Roman pasta dish appeared centuries ago among shepherds tending their flocks in the spring and summer. Read all about the history of this amazing dish here: “Cacio e Pepe: Italy’s Beloved 3 Ingredient Pasta Dish.” at BBC Travel. Make this dish tonight with 3 simple ingredients and my favorite Cacio e pepe recipe found here.

  3. Spring landscapes all but call us to go out into nature and sketch what we see. This is a great weekend to dust off the old sketchbook or pick up a Stillman & Birn Zeta Series field-sized sketchbook and a package of Markart Colour Charcoal Pencils and head outside to just breath, renew and sketch the spring world around us.

Drop me a message and let me know what you are working on or something that renews you.

Also, thanks for reading. This newsletter takes some time to pull together. Consider showing your support by forwarding it to someone who might need some inspiration or buying some of my artwork at INPRNT.

How Distraction Can Help Your Mind Heal Into Happiness.

Hi, Creative Friends,

This week was a complicated one. There were many distractions happening in the world and seems like after a year of being locked down, the world is prepping to return to normality.

As always, re-entry is always rocky and frankly distracting.

However, did you know that distraction can actually help the mind get better at problem-solving and creative thinking?

This week, here are 3 things, and a few more, that inspire creative distracted thinking:

  1. A great book and why we need to get distracted and let our minds wander. “The Net & The Butterfly: The Art & Practice Of Breakthrough Thinking” by Olivia Fox Cabane & Juda Pollack. It talks about how we need to let our creative genius wander only then will we catch that elusive idea.

  2. Following Deb Perleman on Smitten Kitchen and cooking in the kitchen is always a good distraction. Feed your pandemic anxiety with something quick, sweet & delicious! Try Deb’s Salted Brown Butter Rice Treats to soothe the sweet tooth and check out her cookbook “The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook” by Deb Perelman for more ways to distract and create this weekend and beyond.

  3. If sketching out feelings appeals to you, try starting a sketchbook. These “Ecoline Watercolor Markers" and the “Stillman & Birn Zeta” Hot Press (Smooth Heavy Weight Paper) sketchbook or a thinner but more economical sketchbook “Kunst & Papier” Binderboard sketchbook are great tools to start laying out the ideas. You can find great classes on how to start creating a habit of sketching on Skillshare. There is a terrific sketchbook painting class by Leah Goren “Illustration & Inspiration: Keeping a Sketchbook.” She uses gouache, which is an opaque watercolor, for her sketches but you could use any kind of watercolor, including the “Ecoline Watercolor Markers” mentioned above to start sketching away.

Drop me a message and let me know what you are working on or a distraction that inspires you.

Also, thanks for reading. This newsletter takes some time to pull together. Consider showing your support by forwarding it to someone who might need some inspiration or buying some of my artwork at INPRNT.

// Hello, Friends-

At this moment we are living in an interesting time. “The Virus” is circulating around the globe and living in San Francisco, the contagion is popping up here, there and everywhere! This means everyone’s panic button is running on overdrive. This week, when I did my weekly shopping, I was astounded to find store shelves completely empty. Canned goods, toilet paper, dried pasta, flour, disinfectant wipes, and soap vaporized from shelves overnight!

If you are a bit like me, you most likely are having a moment of worry.

You might ask yourself, “Should I start to stockpile goods too?”

And most importantly, “What should I hoard?”

Well, I say forget the bootie paper and salted chicken water and check out 8 things that are at the top of my “Don’t Panic! What To Hoard For Any Pandemic Or Crisis” list.

// Hello, Friends -

Here we are again, right on the edge of saying hello to spring! If you are a little bit like me, it takes some serious effort to shake off the cold, dark days of winter. This time of year, I prefer to leave my house strictly for two things:

#1: To Catch A Ray Of Sunshine

# 2: A Party

Why Are We In Such A Hurry For Quick Magic?

Day 4 Of Finding Empathy

We are always running; our brains always turned on. We require a connection at every minute. We become attached to the moment of now. We need to know what's going on with everyone, everywhere and at all times. As we take in this modern world, it can seem as if everyone else in this world has life figured out. They know the silver bullet, wonder drug or quick magic needed to make life the best it can be.

It can start to feel like we are behind the times, caught in a web of immediacy. We might start to ask ourselves if everything we do is wrong. We beat ourselves up as the world around us screams move faster, be more and do more!.

And the wheel of "You are not enough" just keeps spinning.

quick_magic_animation_1.gif

We forget that finding empathy in ourselves is crucial to our wellbeing. Finding space and time to soak in what's essential around takes "Wellpower" or the power to make ourselves whole. Wellpower gives us the time to stop the chatter of quick magic and create space to find empathy for ourselves.

Until soon friends.

Day 3 Of Finding Empathy

Life doesn't always work out as planned and it can be downright brutal. A sudden death, a lost dream job, a housing crisis, a beloved pet vanishes, a nasty divorce, an overwhelming cancer diagnosis, or any life-shattering event that makes us feel deep, heavy emotional sadness and disappointment.

How can we do to be more empathetic to the people around us that need support?

The first step is to pause and listen.

The second? Provide something that says "Life is shitty sometimes, but I'm here for you."

Until tomorrow friends.

Day 2 Of Finding Empathy.

It's hard to find the right words to say, including to ourselves. Maybe we are stuck in a creative rut or searching for a sage piece of advice. Our internal dialogue has nothing to offer that is meaningful. The thoughts we jot down don't seem right. It's a no spark, no voice moment. We can feel like we have a brain clog.

Today, I have a creative roadblock. Let's be honest; I'm putting up barriers. I'm not doing the work. I have a form of writer's block. The creative side of me is stuck. However, a wise man once said "Plumbers don't get plumbers block. They show up and do the work, fix what needs improvement, and they move on."

So, what kind of wrench will get our creative juices flowing again?

A  whole bunch of quotes.

We should think of a quote as empathy from the universe. Afterall, the cosmos has experienced everything, and it just might have the right words to keep us going.

Thankfully Invaluable has 30 beautiful quotes help get us back to living our creative life.

Here is what Invaluable has to say about creative roadblocks:

It's happened to all of us. You're on a creative kick and then all of a sudden you get stuck and are in a creative rut. Not only is it super frustrating but it can also make you want to abandon the work completely, something you shouldn't do. That's why words of encouragement can be so helpful. It can be from a friend or partner, but the right words are often enough to make your ideas click or at the very least enough to inspire you to get back to work again.

With that in mind, sometimes people aren't available to tell you the words you need to get back to work. That's why having quotes on hand for when you need inspiration is a great way to always stay inspired. Using these 30 different creativity quotes from Invaluable, you can take solace in the words of Da Vinci and Rembrandt, whether you're a painter or looking for creative inspiration in other areas of your life, be it cooking, writing, or other creative ideas. Hear how their thoughts on striving for perfection or what they look to for inspiration, and you may find exactly the thing you need to hear to get back to your creative dreams!

How To See Empathy In The World Around Us.
empathy_sq_2.jpg

Empathy, we don't always see it in our everyday lives. Sometimes it is clouded by limbic brain fueled emotions such as jealousy, confusion, rage, anger, and sadness. Lost in the moment of self-preservation and ego, the experience of empathy isn't always at the top of mind. Like when someone cuts us off in traffic, our boss snaps at us, or our kids complain about dinner we can find ourselves reacting to the situation versus using the power of empathy to change our situation. As change makers and leaders mark empathy as the model for creating a world with a higher human purpose, as it becomes more and more of a buzz word for a way of thinking and living we should ask ourselves:

What is empathy?

After some initial research, the definition of empathy is complex.  A web search for the word becomes surprisingly confusing. Is it an emotion? Is it a way of thinking? A logical approach to seeing a different perspective? An experience?

The answer seems to be yes on all accounts.

Will honing our empathic powers change how we feel toward others such as disgruntled co-workers, political adversaries, bad bosses, frenemies, and anyone who doesn't align with our core values? Most importantly, what does empathy look like to each of us? If we spot it in our every day, will we create change in ourselves and the world around us? Will it make us better leaders and humans?

For the next 30 days, let's empathize with empathy. It seems so misunderstood.
